FAWNA is being criticized today on Facebook by a Khara who wrongly believes it was FAWNA’s job when she called upon the group to rescue an injured rabbit from the roadside at 02.30 today. FAWNA’s volunteers are not permitted or licensed to deal with non-native animals such as rabbits and can not send volunteers to deal with those cases. This is Karak. The South-eastern red-tailed black cockatoo and one of Australia’s rarest parrots. There are only 1,000 of these stunning birds left. Karak was the mascot at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. He is important to Australia and that’s why he’s targeted as one of 20 endangered birds targeted for recovery by 2020 under the #ThreatenedSpecies Strategy.

Habitat degradation is Karak’s biggest threat. So with the support of the National Landcare Programme, I am working with farmers and organisations like BirdLife Australia to find ways to support Karak’s recovery. Check out this amazing footage of the cockatoos drinking in a farmer’s watering trough.

Farming and #SavingSpecies can go together. Australia is a big country. A wealthy country. We have some of the best environment protection laws in the world that help us balance sustainable development and agriculture with saving our species. I’m confident we can meet the target of more Karak in 2020 than today.
