There is an emergence of fungal pathogen Nannizziopsis barbatae in free-ranging reptiles.

The condition is caused by fungal pathogen Nannizziopsis barbatae (and is sometimes called ‘Yellow Fungus Disease’). It is well known in captive reptiles but has now also been identified in wild lizards in NSW and several other states. The lizards presented with extensive skin lesions, severe emaciation and loss of toes and tails.

We remind you that only trained individuals should handle reptiles with suspicious skin lesions and appropriate PPE and handling measures should be employed.

Please report suspect reptiles, or any unusual signs of illness of mortality in wildlife to the Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.
